A few easy ways to lower your equipment maintenance costs

Your bar and restaurant kitchen appliances are almost as important to your success as your employees, and equipment downtime is both expensive and inconvenient. That’s why it’s so important to anticipate routine maintenance needs, and respond quickly to unexpected problems. The longer that your equipment is out of service, the more money that it will cost you!

The good news is that equipment maintenance doesn’t have to be expensive, and an “ounce of prevention” is often all that it takes. Here are a few general recommendations that you can implement immediately:

Train your employees-A lot of avoidable repairs are caused when equipment is used in a manner inconsistent with its intended use. You should never make any assumptions about what your new hires know and don’t know. Be sure to also keep user’s manuals in a safe place that is accessible by all employees.

Develop a cleaning and preventative maintenance schedule-It doesn’t matter whether you run a Michelin-rated restaurant or a tiny dive bar, cleanliness is a must. Floors need to be mopped at least daily, prep surfaces need to be cleaned after each use, and you should wipe down all of your appliances, particularly handles. You also need to deep clean as much as you can. This means cleaning under and behind appliances, and taking apart anything that comes off, and cleaning underneath it.

Be realistic about which repairs that you can handle on your own-No matter how handy that you might be, trying to tackle difficult repairs on your own is often false economy. Not only will you be wasting valuable time that could be better spent taking care of your customers, you could also potentially void your manufacturer’s’ warranties by performing unauthorized repairs. Calling the pros will get you back in business much faster, and you can get back to growing your business!
