Get it in Writing-There may still be places where you can make a business deal with a cup of coffee and a handshake, but the catering business isn’t one of them. Most of your clients have limited experience in planning events, and get so overwhelmed that they might not quite know what they want, and might not remember all of the agreed-on details. Written contracts protect all parties in the event of any miscommunication.

Use The Right Tools for the Job-Most equipment damage is caused by using products in a manner inconsistent with their recommended usage. As your business grows, be sure that your equipment inventory grows as well. You might have gotten your start working out of your household kitchen, but if you want to start booking larger parties, you need high-volume kitchen and serving equipment!

Expect the Unexpected-Many a catering client has attempted to renegotiate a contract at the event due to poor planning on their part. The most common issue is poor attendance estimates. But if you can agree on contingency plans ahead of time for too many or too few guests, everyone wins! And even though you ask to be notified of guests with special dietary requirements, you may not find out until the day of the big event!
