At Don’s Supply, we don’t just consider ourselves a bar and restaurant supply store. Anyone can sell you a commercial oven, a flat top griddle, or a specialty prep table, but what you get from us is that little extra. Kind of like when you go to a deli and order your favorite sandwich. You didn’t order the pickle, you weren’t charged for it, but it just makes the sandwich a little bit more enjoyable!

We’ve been in continuous operation since 1969, and have watched a lot of great bars and restaurants become local favorites. We’ve seen a lot of things that work and a lot of things that don’t, and the reality is that even the most successful restaurants got where they are thanks to good timing and no shortage of luck. But we have seen a few things that successful restaurant owners all seem to do, and they’re actually very easy for you to start doing right away:

Manage by walking around-The chair at your desk should be in immaculate condition because of how little time that you spend in it. There are certainly things that you have to do at your desk, such as payroll and ordering, but during business hours, you need to be on the move. You need to see what’s going on in the front of the house and the back of the house, and you need to be touching tables and talking to guests.

Focus on the right details-Details and procedures are important, and they automate most decision making. But be sure not to get bogged down in minor details that distract from big picture thinking. When it comes to cost cutting and budgeting, always think about making dollars, not saving dimes.

Set up your team for success-When a customer asks to speak to a manager, they often don’t realize that the line employee can usually solve the problem on their own if they have fast track authority. Forgiveness is often easier to get than permission, and your employees shouldn’t be afraid of the consequences if they have to respond quickly to a guest’s concerns.
